What beginners get wrong in Chinese
Pinyin without the tones
The tone is part of the word: mǎi is to buy, mài is to sell. The word lists print tone marks, never tone numbers.
Forgetting the measure word
Chinese counts nouns with a measure word: 一只狗 (a dog), 一件衣服 (a piece of clothing). Learning the measure word with the noun saves relearning it later.
Grandparents on two sides
爷爷 and 奶奶 are your father's parents, 外公 and 外婆 your mother's. The family sheets give the English for each, so the pair is never confused.
Chinese numbers, with a printable chart and worksheet generator, are on our sister site Numbers in Chinese.
