What beginners get wrong in Japanese
Hiragana or katakana
Japanese words are written in hiragana (ねこ, cat) and borrowed words in katakana (パン, bread; ライオン, lion). The sheets follow the same rule, so pupils see each word the way it is written.
Long vowels in romaji
A line over a vowel makes it long, and it changes the word: おじさん (ojisan) is uncle, おじいさん (ojiisan) is grandfather. The word lists print the macrons; pupils who leave them out are saying a different word.
Your family and someone else's
おかあさん is someone's mother, or yours when you speak to her; はは is your own mother when you talk about her to others. The family keys accept both.
